Heavy Fuckin' Metal

I never thought that I would go to the Wacken Open Air. However, this year's lineup got some more bands I liked than usually. It was definitely worth it because the size is not the only reason why Wacken stands out of the masses of festivals.

To begin with the visitors of the festival come from all around the world and all visitors were friendly. In addition to that I had the feeling that much less people drunk too much.

Moreover, not only the visitors, but also the citizens of the neighboring small village of Wacken are very friendly. Many of them build booths along the main road where you could buy breakfast, fruits, beer and much more. There was even an improvised building center! For little money children transported your bought stuff with Kettcars back to the camping area. The only problem was the really long queue in front of the bank.

Of course one of the most important points of a festival is the lineup and that was amazing. One day of Wacken has enough headliners for a "normal" festival. Already some the first bands of a day at 12 am are quite good. The headliners have stunning stage shows with lasers, pyrotechnics and much more. Especially the show of Airbourne should be mentioned: The singer and guitarist climbed the stage without any safeguarding to play a guitar solo.

Unfortunately, I had the feeling that most of the band were giving their last concerts. At least the show of Judas Priest was the one in Germany, Avantasia told also that it was their last show and Ozzy Osbourne is nearly a living lich. ;) Good thing that I have seem at least once, now. :D The Scorpions are announced for next year and they are on their good bye tour, too.

After all the good stuff there is also one negative point: the masses of crowd surfers. If you were standing in front of the stage center you had to lift a never ending row of crowd surfers. Partially they came even one over another! You were completely busy paying attention to them to not get hit at your head. You could not enjoy the music anymore. However, I moved to another place when it was getting to much. That place was a bit more at the side and further in the back.

Last thing to discuss is the weather and we had really luck with it. There were only some showers, but it was always dry at the right times. Only while Children of Bodom were playing there was heavy shower. Luckily I arrived at my tent in that moment (I was to tired that evening to see the last bands). By the way, when Apocalyptica was playing thick mist was coming up which gave the concert a special mood.

All in all I would say the Wacken Open Air was the best festival I visited. The lineup was amazing and everything else was fitting. I recommend to everybody who enjoys Metal music a little bit to visit Wacken at least once. Especially, because the lineup features not only Metal, but also similar music styles like Punk, Metalcore, Rock'n'Roll and more. Nevertheless, after three days of Metal I am happy to be able to hear other music again.
